The Traditional Diabetic Diet
A diabetic diet has traditionally targeted reducing the amount of sugar and carbohydrates consumed. Carbohydrates break down into sugars during digestion and these sugars release into the bloodstream. The premise has normally been that cutting back on sugars and carbohydrates in conjunction with medication will lower one’s blood sugar and bring diabetes under at least some control. This is how the medical community has traditionally addressed and treated diabetes.
In addition, diabetics are encouraged to eat a diet rich in saturated fats such as animal meat, eggs, and dairy products. This is hazardous however, because this diet encourages heart disease and is catalytic towards insulin resistance.
According to The National Institute of health, heart disease is the leading cause of death in those afflicted with diabetes.

In Dr. Neal Barnard’s book, “Reversing Diabetes”, he talks about using dietary changes to positively influence insulin sensitivity. By increasing insulin sensitivity, glucose is brought into the cells more efficiently and one’s blood sugar level will go down. By eliminating excessive glucose in the bloodstream and normalizing blood sugar, the body is able to perform more effectively and defer the potentially devastating diabetic complications, such as heart disease, blindness, amputations, neuropathy, kidney disease, and more.
Let’s delve into the mechanics of the new and novel diabetic diet!
First off, it is well known that carbohydrates will raise blood sugar for a diabetic individual. With respect to this, diabetics are encouraged to consume lower Glycemic index carbohydrates and keep away from those higher glycemic index carbohydrates such as white bread and white rice, (Refer to Glycemic Index Food Table).
This new dietary approach also looks at insulin resistance, however. By decreasing insulin resistance, blood sugar penetrates into cells quicker, and lessens the amount of glucose in the bloodstream. Fat or cholesterol in the cells is known as intramyocellular lipids, and high levels of lipids has ultimately been linked to insulin resistance.
This has been shown in various research studies to include a study from the national institute of health on veganism and its relationship with insulin resistance and intramyocellular lipid. A dietary food intake that limits fats with lower Intramyocellular accumulation will be expected to decrease insulin resistance. This enables the beta cells of the pancreas to produce and release insulin more efficiently, ultimately resulting in lower blood sugar naturally.
In a Nutshell
The backbone behind this, is a clean and plant-based way of eating which decreases fats such as animal meats, dairy, eggs, cheese, and even oils. By decreasing fats, cholesterol will go down, and in addition, you will naturally lose access weight. In lowering cholesterol, your cells will become less insulin resistant which will in turn allow those cells to utilize blood glucose in the bloodstream more effectively, and ultimately lower your blood sugar.
Simply put, the diabetic individual should consume a high-nutrient diet consisting of live plants - salads, vegetables, fruits, beans & legumes, and unrefined carbohydrates. The end result is a better controlled blood sugar, a healthier heart and organs, and even a possible reversal of Type 2 diabetes altogether!
